When is Black Friday?

This year Black Friday 2022 will be celebrated on the 25th of November or just after thanksgiving, a date which officially opens the Christmas sales season in the United States. On this side of the continent, the government authorised Black Friday in Spain just five years ago, marking the beginning of the Christmas season.

History of Black Friday

There are several theories that outline the true origins of Black Friday. One of them says that the phrase Black Friday was first used on September the 24th 1869, because of the financial collapse caused by Jay Gould and Jim Fisk, who bankrupted hundreds of companies on Wall Street.
A century later, the inhabitants of the city of Philadelphia blocked the traffic with holiday shopping after Thanksgiving, with the term referring to the chaos in the city. This is the story that perhaps most closely resembles the current spirit of Black Friday. The New York Times created the term in 1975, to describe that same scenario caused by the sales in New York after thanksgiving.
So there´s no exact date for when Black Friday first began, but the tradition has continued for more than 50 years in the United States, and many countries around the world have also adopted the date to attract customers and increase sales. In Spain, it was Apple that first started these sales back in 2010, but since 2012 hundreds of physical and virtual stores have also joined in with this celebration.

Cyber Monday 2022

According to legend, there can´t be a good Black Friday without a Cyber Monday. And if you didn´t think a whole Black Week was enough, Cyber Monday is also coming with its amazing discounts, just in case you need to make up for lost time. The origin of Cyber Monday dates back to 2005 in the United States when virtual or e-commerce stores wanted to boost internet sales with shocking discounts.
